2009 State Baseball Tournament

MACCRAY, La Crescent win first titles; St. Michael-Albertville takes top honors in Class AAA

Two teams won their first titles at the 2009 State Baseball Tournament: MACCRAY of Clara City and La Crescent. The MACCRAY Wolverines, who were also making their debut appearance, defeated Wabasha-Kellogg 3-1 for Class A honors. In Class AA, La Crescent beat Fergus Falls 5-3.

St. Michael-Albertville claimed its second crown with a 7-4 victory over Stillwater Area. The Knights, who competed in Class AAA this year, won their one previous title in 2000.

Class A
MACCRAY (24-3) won its first title after defeating Wasbasha-Kellogg 3-1. It was the first tournament appearance for the MACCRAY, which located in Clara City. The Falcons of Wabasha-Kellogg (22-6) were making their third appearance.

The Wolverines got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when senior Tyler Dammann hit a shot that bounced off the left-field wall, scoring junior Brandon Madsen. MACCRAY held that slim margin until the top of the third when Wabasha-Kellogg junior Holden Hartert hit a two-out single up in the middle and sophomore Eric Sandstrom scored an unearned run.

The game-winner for MACCRAY came in the fifth inning. Junior Jordan Ruter, who led the Wolverines in being hit by a pitch, took one for the team with two outs and the bases loaded. He turned his shoulder, stuck out his elbow, and let senior pitcher Matt Sandstrom’s pitch hit him. The Cougars then added an insurance run when junior Shaun Condon reached on a shortstop error and scored Tyler Dammann.

Senior pitcher Jordan Smith went all seven innings for MACCRAY, allowing six hits and tossing two strikeouts. Junior Holden Hartert pitched the first 4.1 innings for Wabasha-Kellogg before being relieved by senior Matt Sandstrom. Hartert allowed four hits and threw one strikeout with two walks. Sandstrom had two strikeouts, two walks, and no hits.

MACCRAY started the tournament with a 10-2 victory over Browerville/Eagle Valley in the quarterfinals. The Wolverines went up 4-2 in the fifth inning when Jordan Ruter brought home Tyler Dammann with a single, and they scored their final run in the top of the seventh when sophomore Jarrod Holmgren grounded out to third and scored junior Shaun Condon. Senior pitcher Jordan Smith struck out the last two Bronco batters to end the game.

The Wolverines scored three runs in both the second and sixth innings of their semifinal game against Hawley and they went on to win 7-1. MACCRAY’s top four hitters – Brandon Madsen, Tyler Dammann, Jordan Smith, and junior Tyler Wrede – combined for nine of the Wolverines’ 11 hits, had six RBI and scored six runs. Senior pitcher Ethan Pauling went six innings for MACCRAY with two strikeouts, two walks, and eight hits.

On the other side of the bracket, Wabasha-Kellogg beat Chisholm 10-2 in the quarterfinals. Senior Chris Sill hit a double to put the Falcons up 2-0 in the first inning and sophomore Ben Edelbach followed with another two-run double that scored Sill and junior Zach Wolfe. Matt Sandstrom was the winning pitcher for Wabasha-Kellogg. He went all seven innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Sill finished the game with four RBI on two hits and Edelbach added two more RBI.

Wabasha-Kellogg continued its dominance in the semifinals, defeating New Ulm Cathedral 11-2. The Falcons scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Eric Sandstrom hit a triple to score Ben Edelbach and junior Jordan Dick and Zach Wolfe hit back-to-back doubles. Wabasha-Kellogg put together another nice run in the top of the seventh inning, scoring four runs, and getting another double from Zach Wolfe. Ben Edelbach and junior Holden Hartert also had RBI singles for the Falcons.

The Greyhounds of New Ulm Cathedral took third-place honors after defeating Hawley 13-1 in five innings. They led 7-1 after senior Brock Sieve hit a two-RBI double in the fourth inning, and they followed with six runs in the fifth.

Sophomore Colin Wendinger pitched all seven innings for New Ulm Cathedral. He scattered six hits and tossed three strikeouts with one walk. Senior Brock Sieve led the Greyhounds with three RBI and seniors Derek Wilfahrt and Craig Fischer added two apiece.

The Broncos of Browerville/Eagle Valley earned consolation honors with a 9-2 victory over Chisholm. Sophomore Tyler Simonson got the Broncos off to a stellar start when he hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. Senior Scott Lieser gave Browerville/Eagle Valley its second home run of the game when he knocked the ball over the left field wall.

Eighth-grader Mitch Heid pitched the first five innings for Browerville/Eagle Valley. He had three strikeouts, five walks, and two hits. Scott Lieser had four RBI on three hits for the Broncos and senior Patrick Hudalla added three more RBI.
