Three teams — Granada-Huntley-East Chain, Pelican Rapids, Hopkins — win titles with unblemished records; Minneapolis Washburn fourth champion
Class A The Granada-Huntley-East Chain Mustangs completed an unblemished season (29-0) with a 62-54 overtime victory over the two-time defending champion Ellsworth Panthers. The Mustangs recovered from a 10-point halftime deficit to earn their first state championship. The Mustangs had earned the No. 1 ranking in the final poll by Minnesota Basketball News. This was their second consecutive and overall appearance, having lost in the 2008 quarterfinals. Senior center Tim Garry scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the second half to lead the comeback. Prior to their 2007 and 2008 championships the Panthers finished as runners-up in 2003 and 2006.
In a very close third-place game, Ada-Borup defeated Chisholm 60-58. The score was tied seven times, including 58-58 with 51 seconds left in regulation. With six seconds remaining, Ada-Borup junior Yuri Johnson was fouled by junior Erik Paine. Johnson, who was the high scorer for the Cougars with 18 points, calmly stepped to the free throw line and sunk both shots giving the Cougars the victory.
Class AA In their sixth state tournament appearance the Pelican Rapids Vikings finished the season undefeated (33-0) in winning their second state title. Pelican Rapids defeated St. Bernard’s of St. Paul (28-4) 80-68 in a game in which they never trailed. The Vikings, who received the No. 1 ranking in the final Minnesota Basketball News poll, won the game with on overall 49.1 percent shooting. Tydan Storrusten finished with a game-high 34 points, seniors Jan-Erik Lindberg had 18 and Eric Shulstad added 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Pelican Rapids improved its shooting efficiency to 61.5 percent in the second half and extended its lead to 18 points at one point.
The Bulldogs of Plainview-Elgin-Millville led from the opening minutes and cruised to a 70-52 victory over the Lakers of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted in the third-place game. Plainview-Elgin-Millville went 22-of-30 at the free throw line and also shot 51.2 percent (22-of-43) from the field. Junior Cole Olstad had 17 points, sophomore Cole Olstad had 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and senior Andrew Larson had 13 points.
Class AAA No. 2 seed Minneapolis Washburn (26-5) defeated No. 1 seed Mankato West (29-2) for its third state title in the team’s seventh tournament appearance. It was the first appearance for either team since 1994. That was the year that the Millers won their second title. Their first was earned in 1955. This year’s final tally was 58-45. Washburn established the game’s tone early, creating an 11-point lead at the break. Seniors Cedric Martin and RaShede Hageman both had double-doubles for the Millers: Martin had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Hageman had 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The St. Paul Johnson Governors defeated the Spring Lake Park Panthers 86-77 in the third-place game. Seniors Mike Talley and Dion Suggs Young led St. Paul Johnson with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Senior Shaun Jensen of Spring Lake Park tied a state tournament record for most free throws made in a single game with 19. He was 19-of-20 at the line and had a game-high 34 points for the Panthers.
Class AAAA The Osseo Orioles gave the Hopkins Royals a competitive game, but the 19 points that Hopkins scored off of 21 Osseo turnovers may have been a deciding factor. Hopkins turned the ball over only nine times and Osseo was only able to convert them into nine points. Hopkins, the No. 1 seed, finished the season with a perfect 31-0 record in the 16th tournament appearance for the Royals, defeating Osseo (29-3), the No. 3 seed, 69-59. It was the sixth title for the Royals, having previously won in 1952, 1953, 2002, 2005 and 2006. Senior forward Royce White scored a game- and team-high 20 points for the Royals.
In a game that featured 11 lead changes and six ties, the Tigers of St. Cloud Tech prevailed over the Jaguars of Bloomington Jefferson 59-55 in the third-place game. Senior Nate Wolters had a double-double for St.Cloud Tech with 27 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a game-high four steals for the Tigers.
Attendance Total paid attendance for the tournament was 64,355.
