2009 State Girls' Soccer Tournament

Orono earns first Class A title; Wayzata wins fifth in Class AA

Orono claimed its first Class A championship trophy in six appearances at the 2009 State Soccer Tournament. The Spartans, who were the No. 1 seed this year, defeated The Blake School of Minneapolis 5-0 for the title.

In Class AA, No. 3-seeded Wayzata captured its fifth crown. The Trojans, who were making their 21st appearance, defeated the defending champions from Woodbury 2-1 in the championship game.

Class A
The top-seeded Orono Spartans (20-2-2) won their first championship in their sixth appearance with a 5-0 victory over The Blake School of Minneapolis (17-4-1). The Bears were the No. 2 seed in the tournament and they were making their fifth tournament appearance overall. The Blake School won one previous title in 2000.

Senior Kerrie Dingmann opened the scoring for Orono at 12:10 when she headed in a perfect cross from senior Amy Larson. Four minutes later, seventh-grader Sophie Babo struck with an unassisted left-footed shot. At 28:23, Babo scored the second of her three goals on a cross from ninth-grader Nikki Smith and Orono took a commanding 3-0 lead into the break.

Smith opened the second-half scoring with an assist from senior Caitlin Quilty and Dingmann assisted on Babo’s final goal at 46:45.

Orono started the tournament with a 1-0 victory over the first-time qualifiers from Rogers. The Royals outshot the Spartans 8-4, but Sophie Babo’s goal off a direct kick at 11:55 was the only goal Orono needed to advance.

The Spartans faced their greatest challenge in the semifinals when they needed overtime to get past the unseeded La Crescent Lancers 2-1. Junior Jena Kadlec put La Crescent on the board at 6:44, but sophomore Amie Tunheim tied the score in the 17th minute with an assist from Kerrie Dingmann. The two teams then battled to overtime. Finally, 5 minutes, 40 seconds into the extra period, Amy Larson arched a corner kick from the right side, over the head of most of the players planted in front of the goal. Dingmann, however, was a little deeper in line with the left post, and when the ball found her foot, she one-timed it over the outstretched arms and hands of ninth-grade goalkeeper Cheyanne Carpenter.

The Blake School defeated unseeded Mankato West 3-0 in the quarterfinals. The Bears controlled play through most of the game, but it was junior Hillary Crowe’s goal with one minute left in the first half that gave The Blake School a crucial 2-0 advantage.

In the semifinals, the Bears edged past unseeded Cloquet 2-1. Cloquet senior Emily Johnson tied the score 1-1 at 57:36, but Blake School eighth-grader Lydia Sutton countered with the game-winner at 64:47. Sutton took a pass from sophomore Meghan Bauer down the left side, and rolled the ball past the Lumberjacks’ junior keeper Kaitrin Rathe.

Cloquet came back to take third-place honors with a 1-0 victory over La Crescent. Junior Jessie Ryan scored the match’s only goal on a give-and-go that began at the top of the penalty box. Senior Emily Johnson was credited with the assist.

East Grand Forks and East Ridge of Woodbury completed the Class A field. Mahtomedi, which claimed top honors in 2008, was eliminated by East Ridge in the Section 4 semifinals.

Class AA
The Wayzata Trojans (18-0-5), who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed, upset the defending champions from Woodbury (21-1-1) 2-1 in this year’s championship tilt. It was the fifth championship for Wayzata in its 21st appearance. The Trojans won previously in 1991, 1996, 2000, and 2002. In 2008, Wayzata went home with third-place honors.

Woodbury was the top seed this year and was making its 11th appearance. In addition to last year, the Royals also won titles in 1999, 2003, 2004, and 2006.

The two teams played a scoreless first half before Woodbury senior keeper Brittany Cygan lost control of the ball in front of the net in the 49th minute. It dropped at the feet of Wayzata senior Erin Krause’s feet, and she tapped it into the back of the net.

Less than 10 minutes later, Woodbury tied the score on a penalty kick from senior Caitlin Graboski. But the Trojans weren’t ready to give up, and at 68:29 Wayzata junior Taylor Wodnick beat Cygan with a header to clinch the victory.

Wayzata started its championship run with an 8-0 quarterfinal victory over Elk River. The Trojans outshot the Elks 24-1 and Taylor Wodnick scored three of Wayzata’s first four goals. Ninth-grader Kylie Schwarz also tallied two goals for the Trojans.

No. 2-seeded Edina took Wayzata to a 5-4 shootout in the semifinals, but the Trojans prevailed with a 1-0 victory. Wayzata’s junior keeper Megan Pyrz stopped the Hornet’s second shot, and Taylor Wodnick netted the game-winner.

On the other side of the bracket, Woodbury handed Lakeville North a 5-0 quarterfinal loss. The Royals led More
