2009 State Wrestling Tournament

Apple Valley, Simley earn additional hardware
while Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg wins first;
St. Michael-Albertville’s Thorn wins fourth title

Apple Valley made its consistent and visible presence known once again at the 2009 State Wrestling Tournament. The Eagles won their 17th team championship and had nine individuals place third or higher, including five champions in Class AAA. The Eagles had eight wrestlers in championship matches. After their individual work was done they went out and defeated Albert Lea 62-6 for the team title. It was the 27th consecutive appearance for the Eagles in the tournament. In its first year as a co-op, Bloomington Jefferson/Bloomington Kennedy earned a third-place trophy with a 37-30 victory over Cambridge-Isanti. Wayzata won the consolation title as it edged St. Cloud Apollo 35-31.

Simley also defended its title, defeating Foley 34-21. It was Simley’s sixth state championship. Unranked Foley was the surprise team in Class AA, defeating second-seeded Perham, and third-seeded Plainview-Elgin-Millville. P-E-M finished third with decision at heavyweight to beat St. Michael-Albertville 28-25. Scott West downed Mora 47-8 for the consolation title.

In its first state tournament appearance, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg won the Class A title with a 32-25 win over Kenyon-Wanamingo. K-M-S was down 19-0 before winning eight consecutive matches to go ahead 32-19. Medford edged Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 29-24 for third place. Frazee won the consolation trophy by defeating Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 42-25.

There were 42 individual champions across the three classes and 35 of them were first-time state winners. Of the seven repeat winners, David Thorn of St. Michael-Albertville finished his high school career with his fourth state championship. The repeat winners winning for their second time were; Christian Skillings of Minneota, Kevin Steinhaus of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, Drew Fleming of Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran, Justin LaValle and Tyler Lehman of Apple Valley, and Robby Fisher of Bloomington Jefferson/Bloomington Kennedy.

Several teams had multiple champions. In Class AAA, Apple Valley had five and Anoka had two. In Class AA, Thief River Falls/Goodridge had three and St. Michael-Albertville had two. Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg of Class A had three state champions.

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg boasted champions at three consecutive weight classes beginning with Steinhaus (50-0) at 160, Mitch Hagen (49-0) at 171, and Joel Bauman at 189. There were 12 first-time winners in this class. Although Medford entered the final matches with five wrestlers, only one, senior Tyler Yule, won a title at 152.

The Prowlers of Thief River Falls/Goodridge had three first-time winners in Class AA. Jacoby Bergeron won at 103, Kevin Fynboh won at 145, and Travis Peralta won at 171. In addition to Thorn, St. Michael-Albertville’s Jordan Campa won his first title at 160. There were 12 first time champs.

Apple Valley qualified nine wrestlers in Class AAA and five became champions, three finished runners-up, and one finished third. Three-time champion Destin McCauley of Apple Valley faced another returning champion, Robby Fisher of the Jefferson/Kennedy Bloomington co-op, in a tremendous final match at 135 won by Fisher 10-5.

The four-day tournament drew 53, 824 fans -- 1,315 better than the 2008 total.

  • WE WILL CALL A DELAY OF MATCH (STALLING) IF THE WRESTLER STRAGGLES TO THE EDGE OF MAT AFTER REPORTING TO THE TABLE AND DOESN'T COME TO THE CENTER OF THE MAT READY TO COMPETE. THIS IS STALLING.

Rule 7.6.6b states it is stalling when either wrestler delays the match, including staggling back from out of bounds, unnecessarily changing or adjusting equipment or delay in assuming the starting position on the mat.......

This is from last year's rules power point.

Reporting to the Scorer’s Table Ready to Wrestle (2008-09 NFHS Point of Emphasis):

The 2006-07 rules changes redefined the length of the match in both dual meets and tournaments to extend from when the proper wrestler reports to the table to the end of wrestling. This has not created any difficulty in dual meets since by tradition the wrestler goes to the scorer’s table and then directly to the center of the mat to begin wrestling. If the wrestler reports not properly equipped and ready to wrestle, he/she is sent back to the coach and penalized accordingly. In tournaments, traditionally the wrestlers would go to the table usually still in warm-ups, pick up their ankle bands and go to their corner with their coach and get ready to wrestle. This is no longer acceptable since the match in tournaments starts when the proper wrestler reports to the table.

The wrestler is now required to report to the table ready to wrestle, and then immediately report to the mat and not go back to his/her corner. If the wrestler is not properly equipped he/she will be sent back to the coach and penalized as per Rule 7-3-6, which is a Technical Violation and a match point is awarded to their opponent and they are also charged an injury time-out in order to become properly equipped. If the wrestler comes to the scorer’s table and is properly equipped and goes back to the coach, he/she is guilty of delaying the match and shall be penalized as per Rule 7-6-6b, which is stalling, and a warning will be issued the first time. If the wrestler has reported properly and then reports to the wrestling area on the mat and then returns to his/her coach in the corner he/she is guilty of leaving the wrestling area without the referee’s permission and shall be penalized as per Rule 7-3-4, which is a Technical Violation and a match point is awarded to their opponent.

  • UNIFORM CLARIFICATION REGARDING THE USE OF ADHESIVE TAPE:

Rule 4.1.5 states "The uniform (includes required shoes, headgear, and singlet) shall be worn as intended/designed by the manufacturer."

The manufacturer did not intend for adhesive tape to be a part of the headgear as it is sold. The only tape we will allow is when a pad is taped to the headgear to protect a cauliflower ear.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 16, 2007) -- In its ongoing effort to improve high school wrestling rules, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Wrestling Rules Committee adopted several rules changes during the group's annual meeting March 25 and 26 in Indianapolis.

Although many of the changes focused on clarifying existing rules, the most notable change offers wrestlers an entirely new option. New Rule 5-20-5a allows an offensive wrestler to request a neutral position restart by signaling his desire to a referee.More
