2009 State Girls' Cross Country Running Meet

Elk River and Waseca bring home first trophies;
Shakopee’s Hauger and Perham’s McClellan claim first individual titles

Class A

No stranger to top-ten finishes, senior Maddie McClellan of Perham won her first cross country title. During the last four years, McClellan has bettered her place each year, placing 39th, sixth, fourth, and then third in 2008. McClellan led for most of the race, although she was challenged by runner-up Kayla Woltz, a Chatfield ninth-grader. McClellan had a three-stride lead on Woltz with 400 meters to go, and increased it as she approached the finish line. McClellan finished in 14:55.2, and Woltz – who also brought home the silver medal in 2008 - finished in 15:02.3.

Eighth-grader Clare Flanagan of The Blake School of Minneapolis was in the lead pack for the entire course and finished third, with a time of 15:17.6. Lauren Friese, a Fairmont sophomore, was fourth with a time of 15:21.9 and Courtney Alama, an Annandale eighth-grader, was fifth with a time of 15:25.7.

In its first-ever berth in the state tournament, Waseca recorded its first-ever Cross Country team title. Defeating Perham by nine points, the Bluejays earned 81 points and placed four of their scoring runners in the top 18 for the win. Senior Allison Streich was seventh in team scoring and just behind her was sophomore Morgan Larson, ninth in team scoring. Two middle-schoolers, seventh-grader Sally O’Brien and eighth-grader Sadie Novak-Klug, finished 16th and 18th in team scoring for the Bluejays. Rounding out the scoring places for Waseca was junior Hannah McRaith, 31st in team scoring.

Perham’s 92 points and second-place finish was paced by McClellan. Fellow seniors Holly Sheets and Shayla Fulford placed 11th and 24th in team scoring for the Yellowjackets. Perham has placed fourth or higher for six consecutive years. Mountain Lake-Butterfield-Odin’s 121 points was good enough for third. Senior Petra Nelson led the way to the third-place finish with her 17th place in team scoring.

Class AA
Shakopee ninth-grader Maria Hauger already had a three-stride lead by the 400-meter mark, extended it to up to 20 strides during the race, and then held off challenger Emma Bates of Elk River on the final stretch. Hauger, who placed ninth in 2008 finished the 4000-meter course in 14:40.8. Bates, a senior, captured the second-place medal, and was less than one second off of Hauger at the finish after her final push. She finished in 14:41.7, was seventh last year, and third in 2007.

Alexandria sophomore Jamie Piepenburg placed third in a time of 14:45.6. Fourth place and fifth place were captured by Sartell-St. Stephen’s senior Heidi Peterson (14:50.4) and Eden Prairie junior Megan Platner (14:54.8), respectively.

Elk River won its first cross country title in a race in which seven points separated first from third place. The Elks finished with 120 points, just three points ahead of their runners-up. Bates led the Elks and junior Abbi Aspengren placed fifth in team scoring for the Elks. Ninth-grader Chelsea Schlegel, 29th in team scoring, senior Victoria Janasz, 39th in team scoring, and eighth-grader Erin Ness, 45th in team scoring completed the scoring places for Elk River’s first team win. Also a newcomer to the cross country medalists, Prior Lake finished second with 123 points. Senior Paige Foster was the top finisher for the Lakers, 15th in team scoring; all five point-getting Lakers finished in the top 32 of team scoring. Defending champion Eden Prairie finished in third, with 127 points, led by Platner.
