Bagley/Fosston earns first Class A team title; Mounds View wins second in Class AA; Bagley/Fosston’s Huschle sets all-time long jump record
The co-op of Bagley/Fosston walked away with its first team crown in Class A, while Mounds View returned to the championship podium in Class AA. It was the second team title for the Mustangs, who won their first in 2006.
Analisa Huschle, a sophomore who competed for Bagley/Fosston, set the only all-time record at this year’s meet. Her long jump distance of 19 feet and two and one-quarter inches bettered the previous record of 19 feet set by Charlene Butler of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale in 1997. Huschle also set a new Class A record in the triple jump with a final distance of 38 feet and one inch.
Class A Sophomore Analisa Huschle won three events and anchored a second-place relay team as the co-op of Bagley/Fosston won its first team title with 47 points. The victory was an improvement on last year’s fourth-place showing.
Huschle won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.19 and went on to set records in both the triple jump and the long jump. Her triple jump distance of 38 feet and one inch was good enough for a new Class A record, and her long jump distance of 19 feet and two and one-quarter inches set a new Class A and all-time record. Her triple jump title was also her second consecutive.
Charlene Butler of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale set the previous long jump record of 19 feet in 1997, and Sarah Brockberg of Pipestone-Jasper set the previous record of 37 feet and nine and three-quarter inches in the same year.
Senior Mariah Berg, ninth-grader Kyli Day, and sophomore Lynsey Bardwell competed with Huschle on the 4x200 relay team that placed second to Providence Academy. Berg earned the final points for Bagley/Fosston with a ninth-place finish in the long jump.
The defending champions from Providence Academy claimed runner-up honors in the team scoring with 40 points. East Grand Forks placed third with 37 points.
In addition to Huschle, two other individuals and one relay team successfully defended their 2008 titles. Senior Ashley Tingelstad of East Grand Forks, who competed for Lake Park-Audubon last year, won her second consecutive title in both the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Her respective times were 12.88 and 57.48. Senior Melissa Varpness of Montevideo won her second crown in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.33.
Providence Academy, which is a co-op between Providence Academy of Plymouth and Heritage Christian Academy of Maple Grove, won its second consecutive championship in the 4x200 relay. Seniors Rebekah Dyrud, Sam Zopfi, and Leighton Lerum competed both years, with seventh-grader Carolina Bowe rounding out this year’s squad.
Analisa Huschle and Ashley Tingelstad were the only competitors to win multiple titles at this year’s meet, and Huschle was the only one to set new records.
Class AA The Mounds View Mustangs won two relays and placed competitors or teams in five other events as they won their second Class AA crown with 48 points. They won their first title in 2006.
The Mustangs won their second consecutive title in the 4x200 relay and they also upset the defending champions from Hopkins to win the 4x400 relay. Senior Leah Hanson and sophomores Kelsey Bethke and Emily Toninato competed on both teams. Senior Anna Blaske rounded out the 4x200 team and senior Missy Shelendich completed the 4x400 team.
The Mounds View team of Shelendich, ninth-grader Beth Knopf, and seniors Taylor Warnes and Lindsey Hjelm earned runner-up honors in the 4x800 relay, and Leah Hanson, Emily Toninato, junior Kayla Sawtell, and ninth-grader Jenny Mullin, placed ninth in the 4x100 relay.
Sawtell also earned points for the Mustangs with her third-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles and her ninth-place showing in the 300-meter hurdles. Alex Stych, a sophomore, put the finishing touches on the Mounds View victory with her sixth-place finish in the pole vault.
The Hopkins Royals placed second in the team competition with 44 points and Robbinsdale Armstrong followed with 41 points. The defending champions from Eastview of Apple Valley finished in seventh place with 33 points.
Fergus Falls ninth-grader Haylie Zenner and Grand Rapids senior Jessica Cagle were both successful in defending their 2008 titles. Zenner claimed her second consecutive crown in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.33, and Cagle won her second consecutive gold medal in the discus with a distance of 157 feet and six inches. Last year, Cagle set a new all-time record in the discus with her throw of 162 feet and four inches.
Outside of the Mounds View relay teams, there were no more multiple winners at the 2009 meet and no new records were set.
