2008 State Boys' Hockey Tournament

Coaches pick St. Thomas Academy, Roseau as top seeds

Sixteen coaches sat at their computers this morning and voted to determine the top four seeded teams in each class for the 2008 State Boys' Hockey Tournament. When the tabulating was completed, St. Thomas Academy was chosen No. 1 in Class A, and Roseau, the only undefeated team in the field, was chosen No. 1 in Class AA.

The coaches logged onto a special page of the League Web site. Each coach ranked the other teams 1 through 7. The highest and lowest rankings for each team were discarded, leaving five rankings for each team. From those rankings, the top four seeds were selected. In conference calls with all eight head coaches of each class, League Associate Director Craig Perry announced the top four seeds. Coaches association representative Mike MacMillan, head coach at Buffalo, then conducted a blind draw of the four remaining teams to establish the opponents for the seeded teams.

The Class A tournament opens Wednesday, March 5, with No. 2 seed Marshall School of Duluth facing Mankato West. The second game features No. 3 seed Warroad versus Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato. The evening session opens with No. 1 seed St. Thomas Academy of Mendota Heights playing Little Falls, followed by No. 4 seed St. Cloud Cathedral versus The Blake School of Minneapolis.

The Class AA tournament opens Thursday, March 6, with No. 2 seed Edina facing the C-E-C Lumberjacks, a cooperative involving Cloquet, Esko and Carlton. The second game will have No. 3 Benilde-St. Margaret's of St. Louis Park playing Woodbury. The evening session opens with No. 1 seed and defending champion Roseau versus Blaine, followed by No. 4 seed Hill-Murray of Maplewood challenging Lakeville South
