Blake Boys' Hockey

Home Page Photo The 2009-10 Blake Bears Boys' Hockey Team will begin the 2009-10 hockey season looking to build upon lessons learned and experiences gained in the 2008-09 campaign. Having graduated several key point-producing players, many underclassmen from last seasons varsity and junior varsity teams return ‘a year older’ poised to compete for varsity ice time and roster spots. Coming off of what many described as a ‘building season’ in 2008-09, this year’s Blake Bears will work to build its own identity, earn its own successes through the process of the hockey season, and work towards the ultimate goal of the state championship. Hallmarks of the Blake Boys Hockey program include team speed, a tenacious work ethic, sportsmanship in team play, and a commitment to daily improvement throughout the season. The 2009-10 Blake Bears will strive to live up to these ideals. Team goals will include winning the Bob Nelson Tournament, the Schwan Cup Silver Division Holiday Tournament at Roseville, the Tri-Metro Conference, and Section 2A and MSHSL Championships.

Returning Blake players realize the importance of consistency, work ethic and selfless teamwork in building a successful hockey team. While the 2008-09 Blake Bears graduated 45.3% of its season goal scoring totals, the 2009-10 Bears will look for a balanced offensive scoring attack. Through teamwork, work ethic and experience, players will look to build upon past production shown, and for new offensive contributors to emerge. Likewise, the Bears will look to develop its own foundation of teamwork and team defense. With three juniors and a sophomore goaltender in the program, competition will be fierce for goaltending minutes.

Team captain, senior and two-year lettermen Kasey Boyd (F, 08-09: 6G,6A=12Pts) will provide the foundation for a strong nucleus of team leadership. Returning senior lettermen include: Cam Falvey (D, 08-09: 1G,9A=10Pts), Kolten Fischer (F, 08-09: 3G,5A=8Pts), and Steve Patterson (D, 3G,2A=5Pts). This group of seniors will be looked to for determined leadership, and selfless, gritty play. Returning junior letter-winners include: Ryan Bullock (F, 08-09: 13G,21A=34Pts), George Ordway (F, 08-09: 14G,13A=27Pts), Donald Chute (F, 08-09: 3G,14A=17Pts), Ford Traff (F, 08-09: 3G,6A=9Pts), David Tearse (D, 08-09: 0G,3A=3Pts), Reed Mandel (D, 08-09: 1G,1A=2Pts), Ryan Hayes (G, 08-09: 14GP, 4-8-0), and Evan Oncay (G, 08-09: 19GP, 11-4-0). These players will be looked upon to contribute in many expanded team roles, and form a cohesive team nucleus with the senior class.

The Bears ‘face-off’ the season hosting the Bob Nelson Tournament November 27-28, 2009, with a tournament field including traditional rivals the University School of Milwaukee, Delano and Owatonna. Non-conference opponents in 2009-10 include Cretin, Totino-Grace, Thief River Falls, Crookston, St. Louis Park, and Minnetonka. The Bears will faceoff against Roseville in the opening game of the Schwan Cup Holiday Tournament. Tri-Metro conference home and home games include St. Paul Academy, Minnehaha Academy, Providence Academy, The Saints, Breck, Como Park, and St. Paul Johnson.

The Blake Bears Boys Hockey Team is coached by John Hamre (Entering 8th year at Blake, 135-58-8 overall). Blake coaches include Jesse Bull (8th year in Blake program), Jon Sturgis (8th year in Blake program, Blake Captain ’93-94), Jay Campbell (4th year in Blake program), Jon Van Bergen (2nd year in Blake Hockey program, 4th year in Blake athletics), Rob Page (1st Year Coaching in Blake Program, Blake Captain ’02-03 and ’03-04), Ryan Hultstrand (Graduate Assistant Coach, 3rd Winter working with Program), and Chris Slocum (Blake Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, 8th year in Blake program).
