HOME OF THE RAILS
By Reilly Fawcett
Snow on the streets, ice on the lakes, and cold weather can only mean one thing, hockey season. The Proctor boy’s team hasn’t been to the state tournament since 1997. The Proctor- Hermantown Mirage girls recently went to the state tournament in 2010. Both of these teams have new coaches on staff and will have to adjust to their coaching style. Jake Hamilton is a senior on the Proctor boys team. Their goals this year is to be the hardest working team around and have a record over .500. To make this goal possible and be more successful they are doing more conditioning. All the seniors were a big part of the team last year. Jake said that they have a lot of returning players which will add a lot of experience to the team. They also are developing a lot of the younger kids. Their toughest competitor this year will be Cloquet because they have one of the best lines in the state. Steve Rodberg is their new head coach. Most of the boys like him because he works them hard to become the best they can possibly be. Senior Justina Lindberg is the captain for the PHM girl’s hockey team. Their goals for the season is make it to the state tournament and try to develop the younger kids to play at a varsity level. To reach their goals they are doing more conditioning, off ice workouts, and more team activities. They only had three seniors last year, but they were a huge part of the team. The seniors this year are a lot closer with the younger kids and their work ethic is a lot different. Their toughest competitor that isn’t in their section will be Warroad because they have a high built program with a lot of talented players. Their toughest competitor in their section will be Hibbing because they have the most returning players. They have two new varsity coaches. The variety of coaches varies between young and old. Courtney Josephson is a retired D1 hockey player. She played at St. Cloud with one of the teammates that lead PHM to the state tournament. The girls look up to her and can relate to her. Jeff Gunderson is the other assistant coach for the varsity team. He brings a lot of discipline and hard work ethics to the team. Both of these teams have a little amount of seniors, but have a lot of underclassmen to step up and help lead. They are very determined individuals and as a team. As they continue to work hard, stay positive, and come together, they will be extremely successful.
