|HOME OF THE RAILS|
By Taylor Larson
Counting down the days, while the weather declines in temperature, students become anxious for winter sports. Whether people are waiting for ice rinks to be filled or the courts to be waxed, we all have something we’re looking forward to this season.
Boy’s hockey is quite popular here in Northern Minnesota, so when the season rolls around everyone’s television is turned on to the same channels while the boys lace up the skates. We’re all waiting for the rivalries between our local schools to soon come about.
Interviewing our hockey coach here at PHS, Steve Rodberg, getting an outlook on their season was a simple task. He replied to my question, wondering about the outlook of the season, with, “Outlook for the season is good, we have a solid base of veteran players. A strong team defense and goaltending will be our key to success this season.” Also, we discussed that the Proctor Rails Hockey team is expected to be exciting to watch this year.
Every team needs at least a few leaders or captains on and off the ice, but for our team there are more than a couple. The ones Rodberg pointed were senior Derek Dahlgren, senior Dylan Pionk, junior’s Jake Malec and Tanner Bergman, and senior Tanner Haedrich. These guys lead the way for the other players as well as set good examples for the younger ones stepping up to the varsity level.
Although there are no new coaches, Rodberg said that Ken McGovern will be a volunteer assistant coach added to the staff this coming year. He will be helping the players or coaches with anything they need.
Throughout the year there will be fifteen home games, so fans are encouraged to show up at the rink as often as possible. Every individual who brings hope and support to the team helps!
While asking Rodberg what kinds of goals or focuses there are this coming year, he said, “Our main goal this year is to become a family. We need to show up every day with the right attitude, commitment, and dedication while maintaining our focus towards getting better. Ultimately, our goal is to qualify for the state tournament.”
He also emphasized on how Proctor Hockey used to be, proving the team he has this year will be comparable, Rodberg said, “Old school Proctor Hockey is back!!”
