Windom Defeated in a Conference Showdown
Windom faced Morris/Benson this weekend in a Southwest Conference battle. The Eagles traveled to the Benson Civic Center in hope of finding a win after their tough 5-2 loss over Achiever NE Academy. Whereas Morris/Benson hoped to keep their three games winning streak alive.
With a slow start for the Eagles, the Storm took advantage of it scoring their first goal by Brody Gimberlin (Picht, Staples, 5:25).
After receiving a minor penalty by Windom’s Zach Bartosh. Tanner Picht of Morris scored a power-play goal (Staples, Beyer, 13:36) giving the Storm a 2-0 lead after the first period.
Windom was outshot 17-4 the first period and with a late penalty by Windom in the first period Morris/Benson was to start the second period in a power play.
Devin Nielsen (Unassisted, 5:00) started the second period strong scoring Windom’s first goal of the game.
Tanner Picht (Beyer, Gimberlin, 12:39) scored his second goal of the game and shortly after scored his hattrick goal (Unassisted, 16:51).
That led Windom to trail 1-4 after the second period. Windom however closed the shots on goal gap to only one (7-8).
Devin Nielsen (Macek, Pigman, 3:27) started the third period with a bang scoring his second and hattrick goal (Unassisted, 6:08).
Only 24 seconds after Nielsen’s hattrick goal, Picht (Gimberlin, 6:32) scored his fourth goal of the game.
With less than 10 minutes left in the game and the Eagles trailing by two, Stuart Schumacher (Pigman, 9:36) scored Windom’s final goal of the game. Dual penalties by Bartosh and Gimberlin put out the spark of the Windom Eagles leading to a goal by Mac Beyer (Gimberlin, 8:53). Giving Morris/Benson a two point lead of 6-4.
The Eagles were behind by two with less than three minutes to play which lead Coach Ammerman to pull senior goalie Tyler McGowan which lead to a shorthanded, empty net goal by Jordan Staples (Helberg, 16:32) to close out the game for the Eagles and the Storm.
The Storm continued to outshoot the Eagles, 9-4, in the third. This giving Morris/Benson the overall advantage of outshooting Windom 34-15 for the entire game.
The loss brought the Eagles record to 8-5. Despite losing the conference matchup the Eagles still hold their third place spot in the conference.
