| The Warroad Warriors lost their bid to defend the Class A title after a 2-1 overtime defeat by Orono in the quarterfinals. The loss must have hit the players hard because in their next two games in the consolation bracket they combined for 19 goals. Warroad won the consolation title with a 9-0 shutout against the Tigers of Albert Lea. A 7-0 lead at the start of the third period meant running time as long as they maintained a six-goal lead. Stopping the clock never came into question. Senior forward Gabe Harren finished his season with great style, scoring the hat trick, his only goals of the tournament, and added three assists. Junior wing Ben Bengtson scored twice, his only goals of the tournament. The other four goals were scored by junior defender Kyle Hardwick, junior wing Andy Brandt, junior center T.J. Oshie, and senior defender Andrew Hasbargen. Harren, Hasbargen and Oshie led Warroad with three goals each during the tournament. Hardwick had only one goal, but added six assists to lead the team with seven points. The Warriors outshot the Tigers 39-14. Warroad goaltender Tony Sorrels, a senior, earned the win and had 14 saves. The game was marred by 14 penalties split evenly between the squads for 44 minutes, including a 10-minute misconduct miscue by each team. |
