The Bears of The Blake School hit the ice at Mariucci Arena this morning at 10 AM to take on the Mankato East/Loyola Cougars in an elimination game of the State Class A Consolation Tournament.
The first period was wide open, scoreless with both netminders making quality saves to keep their opponents off the board.
The second period became closer checking and more physical as the Bear’s Blake Dressen took a 2 minute crosschecking penalty at the 5:10 mark. Before Dressen’s penalty expired Mankato East’s Michael Green went into the box for slashing. Both team were able to survive the other’s man advantage, preserving the shutout.
At 14:21 in the period the Bear’s Bryant Johnson took 2 minutes for roughing and the Cougar’s Jake Miller was sent to the box for slashing. Thirty-eight seconds into the coincidental penalties Blake School senior Mike Policinski hit a streaking teammate, Chris Murray in the slot. Murray buried it to put the Bears on the board at 14:59.
The physical style of play continued into the third period with each team picking up power play opportunities. Bear’s freshman Josh Birkholz got the final goal of the game during a 5-on-3 man advantage late in the third period.
In a game marred by 12 penalties (6 for each team) it was goaltending that ultimately won it for the Bears. The Blake School’s sophomore backstop Kent Patterson stopped everything the feisty Cougars threw at him to tally the shutout and the W.
The 18-9-3 Bear’s will take on the Prowlers of Thief River Falls (21-8) at 10 AM on Saturday March 10th in Mariucci Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. |
