State Tournament Summary

The Thunderhawks of Grand Rapids (ranked No. 11 in the final Let’s Play Hockey poll) upset the Hill-Murray Pioneers, (ranked No. 1 in the final Let’s Play Hockey poll) 3-2, to earn a spot in the Class AA championship game. The Thunderhawks scored all three of their goals in the second period – on just three shots on goal that period. Shots on goal were tied at 12 goals each after the second period. Hill-Murray came out strong in the third period and outshot the Thunderhawks 12-to-2. Despite this solid effort, they still fell short. Junior Reidar Jensen had a strong game in goal for the Thunderhawks, making 22 saves on 24 shots on goal. Juniors Zach Morse, Kyle Welliver and Patrick White each netted a goal for Grand Rapids. White’s goal was his fifth goal of the tournament.
