Winter 2021 State Tournament Media Information

This page provides information for Media covering Winter 2021 MSHSL State Tournaments. 


Because of the significant reduction in access to tournaments during the COVID-19 Pandemic, limitations will be implemented for the number of media representatives and the access that media have to participants, coaches, etc. Alternative methods of access will be available for those who desire to cover these tournaments remotely. 

On-Site State Tournament Media Coverage Information 

  • Media covering tournaments on-site must be registered and approved by the Minnesota State High School League. 
  • Registration directions will be available at www.mshsl.org/media one week prior to the start of each state tournament. 
  • Media must register by deadlines shared below. There are no exceptions to these deadlines. 
  • A pre-determined number of media will be approved for each event, media count toward the spectator count. 

Media allocations will be considered in these categories: 

  • Community coverage from participating teams 
  • MSHSL Radio Partners covering participating teams 
  • Regional coverage 
  • Statewide coverage 

Media will be approved based on: 

  1. Available space,  
  2. Past coverage of the selected school and sport,  
  3. Media outlet’s long-standing history of League coverage. 

Approved media will be notified. 
 

Information for Approved Media for On-Site State Tournament Coverage 

  • Media will be approved on a per-contest basis. Media may only remain at the venue for the contest for which they are approved. (Contest may be a single game, session, round, etc.) 
  • Approved media will enter through a pass gate and be COVID-screened on site.  
  • No on-site, in-person interviews are permitted during any postseason event.  
  • On-site media are required to wear face coverings/masks at all times and must practice physical distancing of at least six feet. 
  • On-site media are required to remain in designated areas. 
  • School media, designated team photographers or professional photographers will not be granted on-site media access. Schools may choose to purchase tickets through their school allocation to provide access.

State Tournament Information Access for All Media (On-site and off-site): 

  • Complimentary online programs hosted at https://www.mshsl.org/state-tournament-programs 
  • Complimentary streaming access provided for news outlets with teams participating and with a long-standing history of League coverage. Media must register no later than noon two days prior to the first day of the state tournament. Information will be available at www.mshsl.org/media Eligible media will receive information via email prior to the start of the tournament. 
  • LiveStats (Hockey and Basketball)  
  • Event results available on the League’s website at www.mshsl.org 
  • League-contracted photographers will cover championship events. Photos will be available for purchase at mshsl.smugmug.com/MSHSLphoto 
  • Past tournament Archives and Records located on the sport-specific page.  (Go to Sports&Activities-->Select Sport) 

Section Tournament Media Information:

  • Access allowed per venue specifications and registration and approval of Region Secretary.

Hockey Media Allowance (per game): 

Media with participants in schools they cover may apply for complimentary streaming access.

Reporters:

Approved media in this category will be restricted to the press box during the entire game.  

  • Radio Partners-For play-by-play (1 per team, up to 2 total.  Limit of one person per station.) 
  • Registered Community Media Systems-In the role of a reporter. Broadcast with preapproval and fees if applicable. (1 per team, up to 2 total.  Limit of one person per station.) 
  • Regional and Community Newspapers (1 per team, up to 2 total.  Limit of one person per organization.) 
  • Statewide Coverage: (Up to 3 total. Limit of one per organization.)

Photographers: 

  • Up to two total photographers.
  • Photographers will be allowed in the following Sections 110, 117 or 120 and must remain in those sections during the game.  Photographers will not have access to the press box. 
  • Preference will be given to photographers who will provide photos to other media.
