More than 30 officiating leaders from throughout the nation are participating in the annual Midwest Officials Summit this week at the Minnesota State High School League office in Brooklyn Center.
The summit, which first started in 1996, brings together national officiating leaders to reflect and collaborate on best practices and officiating program management.
“The Midwest Officials Summit has been an outstanding event for state association officiating leadership annually for 30 years,” said Dana Pappas, the Director of Officiating for the National Federation of State High School Associations.
“The Summit has grown and welcomed in state association leaders from outside of the region and is an opportunity to share ideas, troubleshoot common issues and develop relationships among the education-based officiating community. The conversations are candid and free-flowing and allow for the development or refinement of best practices. It is also a time to share common pain points and to counsel one another. The position of director of officials is unique and it's nice to be in a room full of people who are 'walking a mile in your shoes.' The meeting is one of my favorite annual events and it is an honor to be an invited guest.”
State associations in attendance are Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Kentucky. Representatives from the professional leadership organizations NFHS, RefReps and the National Association of Sports Officials are also attending.
The two-day summit concludes on Tuesday, Sept. 16.
