The Mahtomedi Zephyrs walked away with their third consecutive Class A crown after defeating Orono 3-2. In Class AA, Maple Grove earned its first title after upsetting the entire field. The Crimson defeated Centennial of Circle Pines 2-1 in the championship game.
Top-seeded Mahtomedi captured the Class A championship for a third consecutive season following a 3-2 victory over No. 3 Orono.
Senior midfielder Audrey Sexson and senior forward Lauren Heinsch scored on penalty kicks eight minutes apart late in the second half to turn what had been a deficit into a state-best ninth championship. It is the second time in the run of championships that the Zephyrs have won three in a row. The other spree came in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Heinsch clinched the title on her penalty kick opportunity with 3 minutes, 11 seconds remaining in regulation time.
Senior forward Megan Marzolf had given Orono a 2-1 advantage in the 49th minute. This was the Spartans’ third consecutive loss to Mahtomedi in the Class A championship game over the past three seasons.
The Blake School of Minneapolis took home the third-place hardware after defeating Academy of Holy Angels of Richfield 2-0. Junior midfielder Amelia Reyes scored midway through the first half and senior forward Ali Fine added another goal early in the second half to spark the Bears’ victory.
Maple Grove, which came into the tournament as the No. 5 seed, completed an upset binge with a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Centennial in the Class AA championship game.
The Crimson, who lost to Centennial in the section final during the 2018 season, scored a goal in each half and withstood a ferocious Cougars' rally in the final minutes to record their first state championship. In 2017, the Crimson were the Class AA runners-up to Eagan.
Junior forward Kelly Kloncz scored in the 18th minute to give Maple Grove a one-goal advantage and junior midfielder Emma Fournier doubled it with a tally in the 42nd minute. Centennial pulled within 2-1 with just more than 12 minutes remaining in regulation on a header goal by junior forward Khyah Harper.
Rosemount defeated Champlin Park 4-3 in the third-place game. Senior attacker Olivia Kraemer paced the Irish with two goals and an assist.
