1. When was Curling a League activity?

The first state tournament was conducted in 1969. Following several years of declining participation, the League’s Board of Directors, in 1977, voted to discontinue sponsorship of Curling.

 

2. How many "Eras" are there in Minnesota High School Swimming?

Three. According to swimming historians Bob Erickson and Art Downey, the Early Era began in 1924 when the Minnesota State High School League became the second state association in the nation, Florida was first, to sanction Girls and Boys Swimming. The Early Era ended in 1942 following a national trend to drop competitive sports for girls. The Renewal Era followed after the passaged of Title IX in 1972. The Class Era began in 1997 when a Class A and Class AA was introduced.

3. How many member schools competed in the first-ever girls track and field state meet in 1972.

4.  What member school has won the most individual wrestling state championships?

Apple Valley with 96. Simley is next with 63 and Anoka third at 53.

 

5. True or False: Janet Karvonen of New York Mills was the first Minnesotan inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame in 1987.

False. She was second, one year behind hockey legend John Mayasich of Eveleth in 1986. Bronko Nagurski of International Falls was third in 1989. Fourteen Minnesotans have received this national recognition.
