Northfield senior forward Jake Geiger was selected as the Class A recipient of the Herb Brooks Award on Saturday, March 9 during the Boys Hockey State Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center.

In anticipation of what could be a successful season for the Northfield High School boys hockey team, senior center Jake Geiger, along with the support of his teammates and classmates, organized training pieces to properly prepare for the commitment of being a strong team all season. His quiet leadership was infectious, his work ethic in practice translated to games and his dedication to team was an inspiration to all.

For his impact, Geiger was selected as the Class A recipient of the Herb Brooks Award on Saturday during the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Hockey State Tournament. The annual award is presented to a state tournament participant that strongly represents the values, characteristics and traits that defined Herb Brooks, a St. Paul native who gained international fame as a hockey coach. The award commemorates the unending influence that Brooks had on the sport of hockey, not just in Minnesota, but throughout the world.

“On and off the ice, he leads by example, and is our overall best player on both ends of the ice,” Raiders coach Mike Luckcraft said.

Geiger scored a team-best 26 goals and assisted on 38 others in leading Northfield to a 22-4-2 record, the Section 1A championship and a second consecutive berth in the Class A tournament.

“He has super quick hands and feet,” Luckcraft said. “Jake is an exclusive playmaker and goal scorer. He plays heavy minutes on the first-unit power play and penalty kill team.”

Geiger has compiled more than 160 career points and will graduate as one of the top five scorers in school history.

“Jake is never sick at sea,” Luckcraft said. “He is a player who is always in the moment and thrives on being his best all the time. Even if it is visible that he’s not 100 percent, you will never know it. He’s always “ready to go, coach.”
