Maple Grove Leafy -- Jeremiah Reesey

Maple Grove freshman Jeremiah Reesey showed courage in stepping forward to become "Leafy," the school's mascot. He also participates in Robotics and serves as the team's electrician. He is thrilled to serve as the school's mascot and aspires to continue as Goldy at the University of Minnesota. Representing Crimson Pride, he says, is a "gamechanger!"

Editor's Note: Welcome to We Are the League, a feature series that recognizes the work, dedication and enthusiasm of individuals who are essential in making opportunities within the Minnesota State High School League a truly great experience for all. During this series, you will meet an incredible array of individuals, including student -participants, who will share their journeys through education-based activities. The League hopes you enjoy this recognition series.

My high school journey

  • Attending Maple Grove High School has been nothing short of incredible. From Day 1, I knew I wanted to get involved and make the most of every opportunity. Being "Leafy" has been one of the coolest experiences ever. Getting to hype up the crowd, spread school spirit, and represent our Crimson Pride is something I’ll never forget. On top of that, I’m also part of our school's Robotics team where I work on the electrical crew. I solder motors, wire up systems, and make sure our robot is running at full power! Every day, I’m learning new skills, pushing myself, and growing way beyond what’s in the classroom. I remember the first day I heard the "Leafy" position was open, and I said "Sure, let's do it!" because I knew they wouldn't let me just have the "Leafy" costume right away because it probably had to be like a sophomore or even a senior. But when I went up to the main desk that day and asked, Can I be "Leafy," they said sure! I was like, whoa, wait a minute. Seriously? They said, yes, because they needed a "Leafy" mascot that night. When my aunt saw me, seeing the look of shock on her face when a giant leaf came through the front door of the house, was shocking to say the least.

Favorite high school memories

  • There have been so many unforgettable moments, but one that really stands out happened at a football game. I was on a quick lunch break when this little kid, probably about 8 or 9, ran up to me, asking all these questions about what it’s like to be "Leafy." That moment was really incredible seeing how much excitement and happiness "Leafy" brings to people. It made it one of the best moments of my "Leafy" career. And then, just a few months ago, my great uncle Rick gave me a motorcycle (yeah, seriously!). I'm going to paint it the Maple Grove colors and make it the official "Leafy Mobile." When I showed my friends the key, they completely lost it — they were totally amazed, telling me how awesome it was and how it made "Leafy" even cooler, that I would go down in history as the first "Leafy" with a "Leafy Mobile."

Why I enjoy being involved with high school activities

  • Getting involved in high school activities has been a total gamechanger for me. It’s not just about showing up; it's about learning, growing, and making memories you’ll never forget. Being "Leafy" and working in Robotics has taught me leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and how to handle big moments with confidence. Plus, it's just insanely fun! I’m planning to take everything I’ve learned and keep the mascot dream alive at the University of Minnesota after graduation. High school is so much more when you dive in and become part of something bigger than yourself. I also want to share that when I graduate and have to pass the "Leafy" torch, I would say to that person you have the privilege of representing the Crimson Pride and all the people that come with it so be the best "Leafy" you can be and show the other schools why you should "Fear the Leaf!"
Leafy 2 Jeremiah Reesey

As he often does during a Maple Grove High School event, "Leafy" is the center of attention in leading the student fan section during the Crimson's contests at the Girls Basketball State Tournament in March.
