2021 Boys Swimming and Diving State Meet Advance Release

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. --- The Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Swimming and Diving State Meet is scheduled for March 18-20 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Here is a look at the meet:

2021 Preview

200-yard medley relay

Class A — Breck/Blake, the three-time defending champion, returns with the best qualifying time of 1:35.57. The other returning teams are Austin (runner-up); St. Thomas Academy (third); Alexandria Area (fourth); Sartell (fifth); Benilde-St. Margaret’s (sixth); Hibbing (seventh) and Delano/Watertown (eighth).

Class AA — Wayzata returns as the two-time defending champion. The others are Minnetonka (runner-up); Edina (third); Maple Grove (fourth); St. Louis Park (fifth); Lakeville North (sixth), and Brainerd (eighth). Edina has the best qualifying time of 1:33.86.

200-yard freestyle

Class A — Carter Larson of Sartell, who placed seventh in 2020, returns with the fastest qualifying time of 1:42.75. Larson will be joined by three additional medalists: Charlie Egeland of Breck/Blake (third); Anthony Hoyt of Alexandria Area (sixth) and Ayden Schueler of Willmar (eighth).

Class AA — Matthew Walker of Edina, who placed fifth last year, is the highest returning medalist. Chaska/Chanhassen’s Reese Hodgins (seventh) and Duluth East’s Grant Wodny (eighth) also return. Chris Morris of St. Cloud Tech is this year’s fastest qualifier at 1:39.24.  

200-yard individual medley

Class A Breck/Blake’s James Pan was the runner-up last year and has the best qualifying time of 1:49.30. Josh Johnston of Mound Westonka placed sixth in 2020, and St. Anthony’s James McCarthy was eighth.

Class AA — Two-time defending champion Hayden Zheng of St. Louis Park is back with the fastest qualifying time (1:50.07). Edina’s Kai Taft (sixth) and Minnetonka’s Ben Binder (seventh) also return.

50-yard freestyle

Class A — Breck/Blake’s Charlie Crosby, the defending champion, returns with the fastest qualifying time of 20.71. Other returning medal-winners include Nicolas Welle of Alexandria Area (runner-up); Garrett Maras of Sartell (fourth); Liam Neary of St. Anthony (fifth) and Liam Noble of Benilde-St. Margaret’s (sixth).

Class AA — This year’s returnees are Evan Bock of Chaska/Chanhassen (runner-up); Owen Nord of Rochester Century (fourth); Daniel Baltes of Maple Grove (fifth) and David Sinclair of Waconia (eighth). Will Whittington of Stillwater Area is the fastest qualifier at 20.68.

1-meter diving

Class A — Three divers return from Chisago Lakes: defending champion Storm Opdahl, Jimmy Nord (fourth) and Tobie Stiles (seventh). Tony McNiff of Princeton placed fifth, and David Binsfeld of Sartell was eighth.

Class AA — Three finalists from last year’s medal-winning field return: Minnetonka’s Oliver Poitevent (runner-up); Eastview’s Alex Sulistyo (sixth) and Lakeville South’s Keegan Gare (eighth).

100-yard butterfly

Class A — Hibbing’s William Stenson, who placed fourth in 2020, has the fastest qualifying time of 50.82. Breck/Blake’s Mitchell Brown (third) and Nam Truong (eighth) also return.

Class AA — Evan Bock of Chaska/Chanhassen returns to defend his 2020 title. The other returnees are Alex Deng of Eden Prairie (runner-up); Elijah Christenson of St. Michael-Albertville (fifth); Patrick Horton of Edina (sixth); Sven Becker of East Ridge (seventh) and Tommy McCarthy of Edina (eighth). St. Cloud Tech’s Chris Morris is the fastest qualifier at 49.14.

100-yard freestyle

Class A — Sartell’s Garrett Maras (fourth), Alexandria Area’s Nicolas Welle (fifth) and Delano/Watertown’s Colby Kern (seventh) return from last year’s medal-winning field. Carter Holmes of Alexandria Area owns the fastest qualifying time of 47.20.

Class AA — Josiah Dunker of Chaska/Chanhassen and Daniel Baltes of Maple Grove tied for fifth place last year. Owen Nord of Maple Grove (seventh) also returns. Stillwater Area’s Will Whittington is the fastest qualifier at 45.19.

500-yard freestyle

Class A — Defending champion Nico Losinski of Simley returns with the fastest qualifying time of 4:47.61. Also returning are Alexandria Area’s Anthony Hoyt (third); Breck/Blake’s Lucio Bollettieri (fourth); Sartell’s Carter Larson (fifth) and Hutchinson’s Matthew Olberg (eighth).

Class AA — Edina’s Charlie Klukow (third) and Matthew Walker (eighth) both return. Rosemount’s Evan Kindseth (fifth) is the final returnee. Maple Grove’s Jackson Brown has the fastest qualifying time of 4:32.13.

200-yard freestyle relay

Class A — The returning teams are Breck/Blake (runner-up); Sartell (third); Alexandria Area (fourth); St. Thomas Academy (fifth); Hibbing (sixth) and Willmar (eighth). Sartell has the fastest qualifying time of 1:26.24.

Class AA — Chaska/Chanhassen is the defending champion. Edina (runner-up); Minnetonka (third); Rochester Century (fourth); Eden Prairie (fifth), and Wayzata (eighth) also return. Stillwater Area boasts the fastest qualifying time of 1:24.42.

100-yard backstroke

Class A — Defending champion Charlie Crosby of Breck/Blake has the fastest qualifying time of 48.64. Also returning are Nick Black of Delano/Watertown (fourth); Logan Schroeder of Mesabi East (sixth); Conner Hogan of Hutchinson (seventh) and Liam Noble of Benilde-St. Margaret’s (eighth).

Class AA — Five medalists from 2020 return: Andover’s Noah Rabb (third); Brainerd’s Tristan Dawson (fifth); Edina’s Patrick Horton (sixth); East Ridge’s Sven Becker (seventh) and St. Michael-Albertville’s Ezra Dickerson (eighth). Will Melsha of Coon Rapids has the fastest qualifying time of 50.88

100-yard Breaststroke

Class A — Breck/Blake’s James Pan, who was the runner-up last year, has this year’s fastest qualifying time of 54.85 Also returning are Austin’s Logan Kelly (third); Mitchell Brown of Breck/Blake (fourth); Mound Westonka’s Josh Johnston (fifth) and Breck/Blake’s Charlie Egeland (seventh).

Class AA — Hayden Zheng of St. Louis Park is the three-time defending champion and the fastest qualifier at 54.69. Also returning are Eden Prairie’s Alex Deng (runner-up); Wayzata’s Nick Kale (fourth); Maple Grove’s Zachary Hopp (seventh); and Duluth East’s Joe Rudd (eighth).

400-yard freestyle relay

Class A — The returning medal-winners include Sartell (runner-up); St. Thomas Academy (fourth); Willmar (fifth); Breck/Blake (sixth); Alexandria Area (seventh) and Delano/Watertown (eighth). Sartell has the fastest qualifying time at 3:09.42.

Class AA — Chaska/Chanhassen is the defending champion. Also returning are Edina (runner-up); Eden Prairie (third); Wayzata (fifth); Minnetonka (sixth); and Stillwater Area (seventh). Edina has the fastest qualifying time of 3:11.41.
