2023 Boys Lacrosse State Tournament Day 1 Recap

The semifinal field has been set for the 2023 State Boys Lacrosse Tournament. No. 3 Shakopee will face No. 2 Lakeville North and No. 4 Prior Lake will match up against No. 1 Benilde-St. Margaret’s.
Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Prior Lake have met in the past four championship games. The Lakers won in 2018 and 2019 and the Red Knights won in 2021 and 2022 (with no tournament being held in 2020 due to Covid 19). This season, Benilde-St. Margaret’s defeated Prior Lake 15-9 in late April.
Shakopee is making its debut tournament appearance and Lakeville North is back after a one-year appearance.
In the first quarterfinal of the day, No. 3 Shakopee defeated Chisago Lakes 12-3. Senior Linus Toward and sophomore Landon Toward paced Shakopee with four and three goals, respectively. Gavin McNee, a senior, led the Sabers with three assists.
Lakeville North fought off a solid challenge from Cretin-Derham Hall, winning 7-5 in the second quarterfinal. The No. 2-seeded Panthers got two goals apiece from senior Leo Piscitiello and sophomore Lane Johnson. Junior Max Melin added two assists for Lakeville North.
No. 4 Prior Lake dismissed No. 4 Mahtomedi in the third quarterfinal. The Lakers defeated the Zephyrs 10-6 behind three goals and three assists from senior junior Jack Tocko. Junior Max Anderson added two goals for Prior Lake.
The wo-time defending champions from Benilde-St. Margaret’s defeated Moorhead 16-4 in the final game of the day. Senior Carsen Brandt was the top point-scorer for the Red Knights. He set a tournament record with 11 points in the game on six goals and five assists. Junior Dylan Parker was the second leading scorer for Benilde-St. Margaret’s; he finished the game with four goals and one assist.
