2023 Soccer State Tournament Release

The Minnesota State High School League’s Boys and Girls Soccer State Tournaments begin a two-week journey to championships this week. The quarterfinals in three enrollment classes will be held over three days this week at six regional sites. Winning teams from those quarterfinals advance to U.S. Bank Stadium for semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 31 and Wednesday, Nov. 1. Championship Day on Friday, Nov. 3 features six title games, three for each gender in three enrollment classes.

Spotlight

Providence Academy is the top seed in Class A for the second consecutive season. In 2022, the Lions shared the third-place trophy with Breck. Sophomore forward Maddyn Greenway, one of Minnesota’s top girls basketball recruits, is also a standout on the soccer field. She leads the state in scoring with 49 goals this season. The Lions’ only loss this season is to Visitation. Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa is making its first state tournament appearance following a 4-0 victory over Stewartville in the Section 2A final. Southwest Christian, the No. 2 seed, is coached by Mark Anderson, who is in his 41st year overall of coaching. He is a girls coaching icon, the bulk of his career spent at Minnehaha Academy. Defending Class AA champion Holy Angels is the top seed and favored to repeat. Holy Angels’ only loss is to Wayzata, the No. 2 seed in the Class AAA field. Totino-Grace, the No. 4 seed in Class AA, is making its first state tournament trip in a decade after upending perennial state tournament entrant, Mahtomedi, in the 4AA final. Benilde-St. Margaret’s is the No. 2 seed in Class AA. Olivia Olson, a senior goalkeeper for the Red Knights, has committed to play basketball at the University of Michigan. Undefeated Edina is the top seed in Class AAA with good reason. The Hornets are averaging nearly five goals per game, but were pushed by Minnetonka in the Section 2AAA final before recording a 3-2 victory in overtime. Wayzata is the No. 2 seed in the big-school class, its only loss to Edina in the regular season finale.

Spotlight

St. Cloud Cathedral claimed the top seed in Class A with an unblemished 19-0-0 record. The Crusaders have surrendered just three goals this season. Cristo Rey Jesuit, a private school in south Minneapolis, is the lone tournament rookie in the Class A field. St. Paul Academy, the defending Class A champion, is the No. 3 seed. Top-seeded Orono is projected as the team to beat in Class AA. The Spartans were the Class AA champion in 2021. The quarterfinal between No. 2 Hill-Murray and Mahtomedi is a rematch of a Metro East Conference game played on Sept. 14 which Hill-Murray won 6-2. Hill-Murray was the Class AA runner-up in 2022. Wayzata is projected to finish its second consecutive season as the Class AAA champion. The Trojans are 17-0-2 and have given up two goals the past month, a span of eight games. Wayzata opens against St. Michael-Albertville in a rematch of the Class AAA quarterfinals in 2022. Wayzata defeated the Knights twice during the Lake Conference season, the most recent a 1-0 victory on Sept. 30. Maple Grove is the No. 2 seed in Class AAA is undefeated with a tie. The Crimson lost to Woodbury in the semifinals in 2022. Woodbury returns as the No. 4 seed and faces New Prague, which is making its state tournament debut. Park, a District 833 member school with Woodbury, is making its first state tournament trip since 1994. The Wolfpack open against No. 3 Minnetonka, one of three Lake Conference schools in the Class AAA field.
