2023 Speech: Moorhead claims four gold medals in Class AA tournament

Moorhead claimed four gold medals at the Class AA Speech State Tournament held at Eastview High School on Friday, April 28. Apple Valley followed with two gold medals.  

The 2023 champions are: Sahiti Atluri of Eastview in Creative Expression; Kinzie Carlson of Owatonna in Discussion; Percy Cuthbert and Eddie Tidball of Roseville Area in Duo Interpretation; Erica Bartkey of Stillwater Area in Extemporaneous Reading; Aidan Marks of Benilde-St. Margaret’s in Extemporaneous Speaking; Halle Browning of Chaska in Great Speeches; Tate Horan of Moorhead in Humorous Interpretation; Sophie Green of Apple Valley in Informative Speaking; Lydia Voss of Apple Valley in Original Oratory; Leif Carlson of Moorhead in Serious Interpretation of Drama; Finn Larson of Moorhead in Serious Interpretation of Poetry; Mariam Elias-Danjuma of White Bear Lake Area in Serious Interpretation of Prose; and Chase Schmidt of Moorhead in Storytelling.

Green and Voss, both of Apple Valley, earned their third medals at this year's event. Three champions were successful in claiming their second medals: Browning of Chaska and Horan and Carlson of Moorhead.

None of the five returning champions were successful in striking gold again this year. Apple Valley’s Wayne Southwell, who won in Serious Interpretation of Drama in 2022, placed third in Serious Interpretation of Prose. Greta Homuth of Moorhead, who won in Humorous Interpretation last year, placed second in Duo Interpretation with Olivia Dahlberg.

The final defending champions all placed second in the same categories they won in 2022: Andrina Rockstad of Moorhead in Great Speeches; Cailin Mayotte of Eastview in Serious Interpretation of Prose; and William Laudon of Rochester Mayo in Storytelling.
