Boys Swimming and Diving State Meet: Swimming Preliminaries Recap

Breck/Blake (Class A) looks poised to defend its team title after turning in stellar performances in Friday’s preliminary swim races. In Class AA, Minnetonka is looking to upset the defending champions from Eden Prairie.

Breck/Blake junior Henry Webb was the only competitor to set a state meet record in this year’s prelims. He set the Class A standard in the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:36.94.

Class A

Breck/Blake looks strong heading into Saturday’s swimming finals after posting the best times in six preliminary events. Breck/Blake, which won all three relays in 2023, captured the best preliminary times in all three races on Friday afternoon. They had 1:31.93 in the 200 medley relay, 1:25.95 in the 200 freestyle relay and 3:09.26 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Andrew Colgan, a senior from Breck/Blake, had the fastest times in both the 200 individual medley (1:51.25) and the 100 breaststroke (53.77).

Henry Webb was the final Breck/Blake competitor to win a race on Friday afternoon. He is looking to defend his crown in the 200 freestyle and set a Class A record on Friday afternoon with his preliminary time of 1:36.94.

Hutchinson junior Conner Hogan was the only other swimmer to win two events in the prelims. He won the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.61 and is looking to defend his crown in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.26.

The Class A swimming and diving finals will be held at noon on Saturday, March 2.

Class AA

The Minnetonka Skippers posted the fastest time in five preliminary events, including two relays. Junior Evan Witte set the tone for the Skippers, winning both the 200 individual medley (1:49.48) and 100 freestyle (44.45). He is also looking for his second consecutive title in the freestyle.

Junior Daniel Shelstad was the only other individual to win a prelim event for Minnetonka. He tied Edina senior Rohan D’Souza Larson with a time of 20.77 in the 50 freestyle.

The Skippers also posted the best times in the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.75) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:04.77).

Sophomore Micah Davis of St. Cloud Tech is looking to defend his titles in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly and he had the fastest preliminary time in each race on Friday evening. He posted a 1:38.79 in the freestyle and a 48.25 in the butterfly.

Jiarui Xue, a junior from Edina, is the final returning champion. He is looking for his second consecutive title in the 500 freestyle and he had the best preliminary time of 4:32.47.

The Class AA swimming and diving finals are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.
