St. Paul Academy and Summit School and Wayzata left no doubt. They remain the Minnesota State High School League's best teams in Boys Tennis.
Both top seeds extended their championship runs — St. Paul Academy to four in a row, Wayzata to three — on Wednesday, June 4 at Minneapolis' Reed Sweatt Family Tennis Center and Baseline Tennis Center, respectively.
Class A
St. Paul Academy became the second MSHSL school to win four consecutive Boys Tennis state championships, joining Rochester from 1962 to 1965. The Spartans' 7-0 victory over No. 2 seed Rock Ridge in the final clinched their eighth title overall.
"It was really nice to be a part of that first one but also just see kind of how we needed to act and really just be in a culture of winning," St. Paul Academy senior singles player David Schumacher said. "It's something that's not really a reflection on us as much as the (2022) seniors, the (2023) seniors."
The team met its "behind-the-scenes goal," as senior doubles player Ben Macedo described it, of not dropping a set in the postseason. The Spartans also earned 7-0 wins Tuesday over Minnewaska Area in the quarterfinals and Wednesday morning against Breck in the semifinals.
"We have great players at the top, like Winston (Arvidson), but we've always been about depth," said senior Jacob Colton, Macedo's doubles teammate.
St. Paul Academy will try for a championship sweep during the singles and doubles portion of the tournament on Thursday and Friday. Arvidson is the top singles seed, while Macedo and Colton are No. 1 in doubles. Isaak Senaratna and Allan Wang are seeded second.
Also on Wednesday:
- Breck wrapped up its 4-3 third-place win over Rochester Lourdes when Rocco Zoya earned a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (7) victory at No. 2 singles.
- Southwest Christian won its second 4-3 match in as many days to take the consolation final against Foley. Drew Denton and Brody Uglum clinched fifth place for the Stars with a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (6) victory at No. 3 doubles.

Class AA
Wayzata was almost as dominant.
The Trojans wrapped up their second undefeated season in a row with a 6-1 victory over Edina at Baseline Tennis Center. They dropped only three sets throughout the tournament.
That included a potential singles final preview Wednesday morning. Wayzata's Aaron Beduhn, the second seed in the individual tournament that begins Thursday, topped Mounds View singles No. 1 seed Soren Swenson, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 10-5.
Beduhn's win in the final clinched the championship.
Wayzata has lost only one team match during this three-year run, none to Minnesota competition.
Also on Wednesday:
- Mounds View swept singles in the third-place match in a 4-3 win over Rochester Mayo.
- Eden Prairie defeated Elk River 5-2 in the consolation final.
