Minnehaha Academy put its offensive firepower on display one last time, capping the season with a 4-2 victory over Breck in the Class A championship game of the Girls Soccer State Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 6 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Sophomore forward Berit Parten concluded a dazzling state tournament run with two goals and an assist to sending the No. 2-seeded Redhawks (15-2-2) to a girls soccer championship for the first time since 1998. Parten, who had nine goals during Minnehaha Academy’s three state tournament games, finished the season with 47. In the Section 3A tournament, Minnehaha Academy scored 17 goals in three games and then matched that in three state tournament games.

Breck (10-5-4) entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed and was hopeful of leveling its record against Minnehaha Academy. In two games during the Independent Metro Athletic Association Conference season, the Redhawks and Mustangs tied 2-2 on Aug. 31 in the second game of the season, and then 12 days later, Minnehaha Academy won 3-2.

The third meeting opened with strong offensive pace from both teams. Parten engineered scoring chances for the Redhawks while Breck junior midfielder Georgia Lewin-Mills was doing the same for the Mustangs.

The Redhawks broke through in the 13th minute  when sophomore midfielder Greta Carlson, who scored from eight yards have a nice volley from Parten. Breck sophomore midfielder Maggie Mixon lifted the Mustangs into a 1-all tie five minutes later with a blast to the upper corner.

Parten gave the Redhawks a 2-1 lead at the break in the 37th minute on a free kick from 30 yards, a shot that sailed into the top corner. She bumped Minnehaha Academy’s lead to 3-1 with what proved to be the eventual game-winner when she scored on a passing shot. A minute later, Carlson scored on a penalty kick to push the lead to 4-1. Moments later, Breck sophomore forward Katie Theissen set the score scored off a corner kick volley.
