Boys Hockey State Tournament hits the ice this week

Minneapolis, a co-op of seven high schools within the Minneapolis Public School System, bounced back from a disappointing loss to No. 5 Alexandria late Wednesday night with a rousing 5-2 victory over New Prague in the Class A consolation semifinals on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Senior right wing Caden Lacher recorded a third-period hat trick and senior right-wing Jack Hanson earlier scored two goals to power Minneapolis (22-7-1) into the consolation final against Monticello on Saturday.

New Prague (11-16-2) opened quickly behind a goal from freshman left wing Luke Portner just 23 seconds into the game. But Minneapolis responded with Hanson’s two goals to provide a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. The Trojans climbed into a 2-all tie off a power-play goal from senior left-wing Charlie Turnberg, but Minneapolis responded with a three-goal spree from Lacher in the third period.

Minneapolis outshot New Prague 42-19, including 14-8 in the decisive third period. Minneapolis ended the game with 42 shots on goal. New Prague won 51.8 of the face-offs.

Minneapolis will take on Monticello at 9:00 AM on Saturday at 3M Arena at Mariucci on the University of Minnesota campus for the consolation title.
