Boys Hockey State Tournament hits the ice this week

Mahtomedi, the Class A champion in 2020, earned a spot in the semifinals for the second time since that title run, following a 4-1 victory over Mankato East/Loyola in the second Class A quarterfinal of the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Hockey State Tournament on Wednesday, March 9 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Zephyrs (17-11-1) used balanced scoring from four different goal-scorers: junior wing Carter Haycraft, senior forward Nick Beiersdoff, junior defenseman Cav Bruner and junior forward Charlie Drage in posting their sixth consecutive victory. Mahtomedi is making its 13th state tournament appearance and seeking a second championship.

After a scoreless first period, Mahtomedi struck first early with an opening goal from Haycraft and then another seven minutes later from Beiersdorf. Bruner pushed the lead to three goals at the second intermission.

Mankato East/Loyola (17-11-1) carved into the three-goal deficit with a power-play tally from senior defender Aiden Prochaska. The Cougars move to the consolation side of the bracket and will face Monticello on Thursday at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
