Class A Girls Hockey State Consolation Semifinal: River Lakes 4, Luverne 2

Girls Hockey takes center state for 2022 state tournament

River Lakes, a co-op of seven member schools from central Minnesota, used two goals in the first period to post a 4-2 victory over Luverne in the Class A consolation semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 24 at TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center in downtown St. Paul. The victory sends the Stars (17-13-0) into the Class A consolation final opposite Mankato East on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Senior forward Kianna Roeske scored back-to-back goals in the second period in sending the Stars to a 4-1 lead with 17 minutes left to play. She gave River Lakes a two-goal advantage on a penalty shot with nearly nine minutes elapsed in the second period. Less than two minutes later, she pushed the lead to a three-goal advantage.

River Lakes built a two-goal advantage behind first-period goals from eighth-grade forward Abby Storms and freshman forward Sophia Hess, respectively. Bu the Cardinals (23-5-0) cut the deficit in half with a goal from junior forward Kamryn van Batavia with just more than five minutes elapsed in the second period.

Freshman goalie Kaydence Roeske made 34 saves, including 13 in the first period, to secure the victory for the Stars.
