Minneapolis Washburn's Aidan Jones wins the Class AAA Boys CC race in 2022

Minneapolis Washburn's Aidan Jones won in a sprint to the finish to capture the Class AAA Boys Cross Country individual championship on Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

It was a banner day for the Minneapolis City Conference on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2022 in Northfield.

The conference was well represented in the Class AAA boys individual race, headed by Minneapolis Washburn senior Aidan Jones, who covered the 5,000-meter course at St. Olaf College in a time of 15:11.8. Just four seconds behind was junior Sam Scott of neighboring Minneapolis Southwest, who finished as the runner-up. Minnetonka senior Nick Gilles was third in 15:27. Gilles was the defending big-school champion.

“I run the lakes and he runs the parkway,” Jones said with a smile as to their favorite running routes in South Minneapolis. “This just feels really good to do this for the city and to promote cross country.”

Jones is the first runner from the Minneapolis City Conference to win a League cross country state championship since Minneapolis South’s Hassan Mead.

Wayzata cruised to the team title with 57 points. Rosemount was runner-up with 98 and Lakeville North was third with 103. It is Wayzata’s second consecutive Class AAA team crown and 14th overall.

Scoring for Wayzata in its latest state tournament season were senior Hamza Mohamed, who was fourth overall, sophomore William Weber, junior Daniel McCollar, junior Tyler Kissell and junior Parker Dietrick.
