Dakota United took first steps toward the possible repeat of dual championships on Day 1 of the Minnesota State High School League’s Adapted Softball State Tournament at Chanhassen High School on Friday, May 16. Each program made history a year ago when both the PI and CI programs won a state championship in the same season. That was a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since Adapted Softball began in 1994.
Dakota United’s CI Division team opened defense of its championship with a 15-4 quarterfinal victory over South Suburban in five innings. Junior pitcher Logan Healy created electricity with a late-game no-doubt-about-it home run over the “Blue Monster” wall in left field. It was the only over-the-fence home run of the quarterfinals.
After a joyous celebration, however, Healy was only credited with a two-RBI triple because the umpire ruled that he didn’t touch home plate to complete the home run. His blast completed the scoring for the Hawks (7-1), who have won seven in a row. Dakota United’s only loss this season was to New Prague, by an 11-8 setback, in the season opener. New Prague (7-0) advanced in the lower bracket with a decisive 9-3 victory over Chaska/Chanhassen/Prior Lake/Shakopee.
New Prague faces Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville in the lower bracket semifinal on Saturday at noon while Dakota United squares off against South Washington County in the upper bracket.
In the PI Division, Dakota United rolled to a 15-0 victory over St. Paul Humboldt in five innings. That sends the Hawks to the semifinals to face Minneapolis South. In the lower bracket, Rochester will take on Osseo. The combined records of the four semifinalists in the PI Division are 26-6.
