Unseeded Maple Grove recorded one of the biggest upsets of the girls quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory over No. 3 White Bear Lake in Class AAA on Thursday, Oct. 26 at Kuhlman Stadium in Edina. The Crimson scored on their first official shot on goal in the 20th minute on a well-placed strike by ninth-grade midfielder Jessica Lee. Maple Grove (9-6-4), the Section 5AAA champion, doubled the lead less than five minutes later on a goal from sophomore forward Kiera Gill.

White Bear Lake (14-4-2) pulled to within a goal when junior forward Jenna Maloy scored with 2:37 left in the first half.

Maple Grove advances to the Class AAA semifinals to play No. 2 Wayzata on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

In Class AA, senior defender Margeaux Voorhees and sophomore defender Elisabeth Thompson scored on headers off corner kicks in the first half to pave the way for No. 4 Totino-Grace’s 4-0 victory over Alexandria at Monticello. Sophomore defender Azaleah Streeper and senior midfielder Olivia Schroeder added second-half goals.

Totino-Grace’s victory earns the Eagles a spot in the Class AA semifinals next week against Holy Angels, the top seed in the field. Holy Angels advanced with a 7-2 victory over Zimmerman at Monticello. The Stars scored three goals in a four-minute span in the first half to set the tone for a convincing victory. Senior forward Audrey Garton had three goals, including two in the second half.

Unseeded Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa, making its first state tournament appearance, held Providence Academy standout sophomore Maddyn Greenway scoreless for 38 minutes of its Class A quarterfinal at Eden Prairie. But others scored in her absence and she ended up with three goals and an assist in powering the top-seeded Lions to a 9-1 victory. Senior forward Avery Lampe chipped in two goals. Sophomore midfielder Olivia Wiggins scored for Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa in the second half to make school history with the program’s first goal-ever at a state tournament.

No. 4 St. Paul Academy earned a spot opposite Providence Academy in next week’s semifinals with a 2-1 shootout victory over No. 5 Esko at Irondale High School in New Brighton. Sophomore Clare Ryan Bradley scored in the 45th minute and then made the decisive score in the shootout to lead the Spartans. St. Paul Academy won the game-ending procedure 5-3. Sophomore midfielder Britta Koski gave Esko a quick start with a goal in the third minute.

St. Paul Academy took another step toward what they hope will be a successful state title defense with a 2-1 victory over St. Paul Washington in the Class A quarterfinals at Irondale High School in New Brighton. Senior Rusheek Kolan and junior Rowan McLean scored goals in the first half to set the tone for the Spartans. Sophomore Awal Wako pulled St. Paul Washington to within a goal when he converted a penalty kick opportunity 36 seconds into the second half.

In Class AA, No. 5 DeLaSalle recorded a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Worthington at Eden Prairie. Senior Juan Muellner Lindor scored in the 17th minute to send the Islanders to within two victories of a successful state title defense in Class AA.

Maple Grove, the No. 2 seed in Class AAA, completed the big-school semifinal pairings with a 1-0 victory over Andover at Kuhlman Stadium in Edina. Senior midfielder Anson Karn snapped a scoreless deadlock on a goal with just more than five minutes remaining in the first half.
