Three weeks of the Minnesota State High School League’s Football State Tournaments begin on Thursday with a three-day run of quarterfinals. Fifty-six games will be played over seven enrollment classifications at 26 venues throughout the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota. The quest is to be one of four schools in each of the classes to qualify for the semifinals that will be played over three days next week at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis.

Three defending championships return in 2023. They include Mountain Iron-Buhl (Class Nine-Player), Minneota (Class A) and Barnesville (Class AA). Runner-ups in 2022, Springfield (Class A), Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (Class AAA), Hutchinson (Class AAAA) and Rosemount (Class AAAAA) are also in their respective state tournament fields.

Eden Prairie, an 11-time big-school state champion since 1996, is top-ranked in Class AAAAAA and opens against Lakeville North on Friday, Nov. 10 at Spring Lake Park High School.

Cedar Mountain (Class Nine Player) and Chanhassen (Class AAAAA) are making their football state tournament debuts.
