Football State Tournament, 2022: Quarterfinals, Day 2

Fillmore Central High School, located in Harmony near the Iowa border, made school history Friday, Nov. 11, when it recorded the first state tournament victory in program history with an 18-16 victory over Lester Prairie in the Class A quarterfinals at Jordan High School.

Senior two-way standout Bryce Corson led the Falcons on both sides of the ball to send Fillmore Central to a spot in the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 19 against Minneota in the semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis. Minneota advanced with a 35-7 victory over Breckenridge in another Class A quarterfinal at Alexandria High School.

Prior to Friday’s victory, the Falcons had been a section runner-up 10 times. As Harmony High School, the program made six state tournament appearances and won a Class C championship in 1984.

In the upper bracket of the Class A field, Deer River scored 26 unanswered points to defeat Mahnomen-Waubun, 26-14 at Brainerd while Springfield raced past Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 28-6 at Crown College.

In other quarterfinals:

  • In the Class Nine-Man quarterfinals, Fertile-Beltrami posted a 22-6 victory over Ogilvie at Grand Rapids while Mountain Iron-Buhl topped Kittson County Central, 42-28 at Moorhead High School.
  • Lakeville South, the defending Class AAAAAA champion, took another step toward a possible repeat following a 37-14 victory over Stillwater at Eden Prairie High School. Senior running back Carson Hansen had three touchdowns and backfield mate Ryder Patterson, added two. The Cougars scored on their first six possessions.
  • In the other Class AAAAAA quarterfinals, top-ranked Maple Grove built a 17-point advantage and then held off East Ridge for a 24-17 victory at Chanhassen High School.
