Class AA championship

Top-seeded Simley put a stranglehold on another addition to its already overflowing trophy case with a 68-6 victory over Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield in the Class AA championship match on Friday, March 26 at St. Michael-Albertville High School. The Spartans won 13 of 14 matches en route to claiming the Class AA crown for the third consecutive season and 10th time since 2008. It also marks the 14th overall championship for the Spartans, who completed the season with a 28-0 record.

Simley’s dominance was on display throughout the season with numerous duals ending with wide margins of victory. Stillwater, which lost in the Class AAA semifinals on Thursday, came the closest to the Spartans, eventually losing 42-19 on Jan. 29. Ten of Simley’s 13 victories in the championship dual against Dassel-Cokato, the No. 3 seed, earned bonus points by either a pin or technical fall.

Earlier this season, Simley’s Will Short earned the 600th victory of his coaching career. During his prep career, Short, the school’s longtime activities director, won two individual championships for the Spartans.

Simley earned a berth in the championship dual with a 56-24 victory over No. 4 seed Princeton. In the other semifinal, Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield recorded a 41-23 victory over No. 2 Fairmont-Martin County West.
