The Adapted Softball State Tournament opens two days of play on Friday, May 9 at Chanhassen High School. Championships will be earned in the PI and CI Divisions.

A year ago, Dakota United had a banner day at the Adapted Softball State Tournament when the program’s PI and CI teams came away with championships. Is a repeat of that feat brewing? Both teams are in prime position to do so when the Minnesota State High School League’s Adapted Softball State Tournament takes place on May 9 and 10 at Chanhassen High School.

Sixteen teams, eight in each division, have not only qualified for the annual state tournament, but they have also earned the opportunity to leave with a championship trophy.

Dakota United is 7-0 and the top seed in the PI Division. The Hawks have scored double-digits in each of their games this season and their closest margin of victory was nine runs in an 11-2 victory over Minneapolis South on April 21. In the CI Division, Dakota United is 6-1 and the No. 2 seed in the South. The Hawks are on a six-game winning streak after losing 11-8 to New Prague in the season opener. New Prague is 7-0 and the top seed in the South.

Did you know?

  • How rare of a feat is it for an Adapted Athletics program to win championships in both divisions in the same sport? In softball, Dakota United was first a season ago.
  • While Dakota United is attempting to win its fifth consecutive PI title, it is still short of a record. Which program holds that mark? Robbinsdale/Hopkins/Mound Westonka won six in a row from 2009 through 2014.
  • In the CI Division, Osseo won five consecutive titles from 2000 through 2004.
  • St. Paul Humboldt’s Mary Bohland, who leads the Hawks’ PI team, is the longest tenured coach in the tournament with 30 years of leadership.
  • In compiling its 8-0 record in the CI Division, Osseo has scored 20 runs twice, 19 runs twice and 18 runs once.
