Softball State Tournaments set to play this week in North Mankato

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. --- Thirty-two teams in four classifications will compete in the 2021 Minnesota State High School League’s Softball State Tournaments at Caswell Park in North Mankato on June 15 and 16. This will be the first state tournament held after a one-season hiatus when no events were held last spring during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Here is a look at the tournaments:

Tuesday, June 15

Class A

Quarterfinals

·       No. 1 Randolph (24-0) vs. Sebeka (18-6), 3 p.m.

·       No. 4 Edgerton (19-3) vs. No. 5 Cherry (21-3), 3 p.m.

·       No. 2 Badger/Greenbush-Middle River (26-0) vs. Springfield (19-5), 3 p.m.

·       No. 3 Browerville (23-0) vs. Wabasha-Kellogg (15-11), 3 p.m.

Semifinals

·       7 p.m.

Class AA

Quarterfinals

·       No. 1 LeSueur-Henderson (21-1) vs. Hawley (24-2), 1 p.m.

·       No. 4 Greenway (25-0) vs. No. 5 Annandale (23-2), 1 p.m.

·       No. 2 Maple Lake (22-3) vs. Pipestone (25-3), 1 p.m.

·       No. 3 St. Charles (22-4) vs. Mounds Park Academy (19-0), 1 p.m.

Semifinals

·       7 p.m.

Class AAA

Quarterfinals

·       No. 1 Mankato West (20-5) vs. North Branch (15-8), 11 a.m.

·       No. 4 Winona (19-5) vs. No. 5 Sartell (21-2), 11 a.m.

·       No. 2 St. Anthony (23-1) vs. Benilde-St. Margaret’s (17-6), 11 a.m.

·       No. 3 Becker (17-6) vs. Cretin-Derham Hall (11-12), 11 a.m.

Semifinals

·       5 p.m.

Class AAAA

·       No. 1 Stillwater (23-1) vs. Forest Lake (22-4), 9 a.m.

·       No. 4 Chanhassen (21-2) vs. No. 5 Elk River (20-3), 9 a.m.

·       No. 2 Centennial (21-1) vs. Hopkins (20-4), 9 a.m.

Wednesday, June 16

·       Third-place games --- All classes, 10 a.m.

·       Championship games --- All classes, Noon

Media Guidance

·       Photographers are not permitted to encroach on the fields of play.

·       Photographers must stay within designated shooting positions.

·       Media are permitted in designated areas on second level of venue.

·       On-site, in-person interviews are permitted in designated areas. Coaches and requested participants will be escorted to designated interview areas.

2019 champions

·       Class A --- Edgerton/SW Mn Christian

·       Class AA --- Rochester Lourdes

·       Class AAA --- Northfield

·       Class AAAA --- Maple Grove

Briefly:

·       One of the most intriguing quarterfinals is the Class AAA matchup between No. 1 Stillwater and unseeded Forest Lake. Stillwater edged Forest Lake for the Suburban East Conference title by one game. They split two games during the regular season. Stillwater coach Angie Ryan is the former longtime head coach at Forest Lake. Forest Lake coach Sean Hall is a former longtime assistant in the Stillwater softball program.

·       Four fields are planning to be used at Caswell Park for this tournament: Fields 1, 2, 5 and 6.

·       Randolph senior pitcher Morgyn Otte has recorded 15 shutouts, 10 no-hitters and three perfect games for the Rockets, who are making their third consecutive state tournament appearance.

·       Rosemount sophomore pitcher Jessa Snippes is dominant in the circle and at the plate. She is 16-1 with a 0.67 earned-run average and also has hit nine home runs with a .633 batting average.
