Volleyball moves into state tournament play with a new format for the League’s culminating state tournament event. A fourth enrollment class has been added and it’s the first change made to the tournament since the third class was added in 1999.

Quarterfinals begin on Wednesday, Nov. 10 for Class AAA and Class AAAA. The Class A and Class AA quarterfinals will be played on Nov. 11. All Class AAAA consolation and championship semifinals will also be played on Nov. 11. The remaining consolation and championship semifinals will take place on Nov. 12 and all four championship matches will played on Nov. 13.

The 2020 state tournament was cancelled because of the global pandemic. Instead, competition culminated at the section level.

The top four seed in this year’s tournament are Mayer Luther (Class A), Southwest Christian (Class AA), Marshall (Class AAA) and Wayzata (Class AAAA).

In the final year of the three-class era in 2019, Wayzata won the Class AAA crown and Stewartville won in Class AA. Minneota went home with Class A honors. Minneota and Wayzata return this year, but Stewartville lost to Kasson-Mantorville in the final of the Section 1AAA tournament.

The Wayzata Trojans are in the hunt for their second consecutive big-school and overall title, and this season, are in Class AAAA. The Minneota Vikings continue to compete in Class A and are looking for their third consecutive title and fourth overall.
