Class AA Girls Hockey State Third Place: Edina 3, Gentry Academy 0

Girls Hockey takes center state for 2022 state tournament

The Edina Hornets defeated the Gentry Academy Stars 3-0 in the Third Place game in the State Tournament Class AA game at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul on Saturday.  

In the first period, Hornet freshman Whitney Horton scored at 1:04, assisted by sophomore Hannah Halverson and junior Samantha Hankinson. Gentry Academy had six shots on goal and Edina had nine. The period ended with Edina 1, Gentry Academy 0. 

In the second period junior goaltender Zoe Laming had four saves for the Stars and the Hornets Uma Corniea, also a junior had five saves in the net. Edina maintained their 1-0 heading into the third period. 

Heading into the third period, Edina’s senior Jane Kuehl scored her second goal of the tournament at 6:01, she was unassisted. Edina’s Junior Lauren Zawoyski scored her first goal of the tournament at 8:53 with assists for senior Vivian Jungels and junior goalie Corniea. 

The teams were evenly matched with 45 shots for the day. Edina had 23 on goal and Gentry Academy had 27. Edina finished the season 27-3-0 and Gentry Academy had a record of 23-8-0.
