After a one-year hiatus, Girls Tennis kicks off the Minnesota State High School League’s fall schedule of state tournament events with the two-day team tournament beginning Tuesday and concluding on Wednesday. That is followed by a two-day individual tournament on Thursday with championship matches on Friday. The Class AA field will play at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus while Class A is at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in south Minneapolis.

The tournaments were not held during the 2020-21 school year because of the global pandemic. Competition topped at the section level with team champions.

Minnetonka enters the Class AA state tournament as the No. 1-ranked team. In 2019, the Skippers finished runner-up to Edina. Rochester Mayo earned the No. 2 seed and Blake is at No. 3. Mounds View and Elk River, respectively, round out the top five seeds in the team tournament.

In Class A, former champions Breck and Rochester Lourdes are in the field. Breck last won the Class A title in 2013. Rochester Lourdes last won a girls tennis team championship in 2010. From 1997 to 2006, Rochester Lourdes had a streak of 10 consecutive Class A titles. Those two schools square off in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
