Track and Field 2025: Class AA State Meet records fall amid rain

Class AA competitors battled a bout of rainfall during Wednesday's first session of the Minnesota State High School League's 2025 Track and Field State Meet, but records still fell while state championships and spots in the finals were claimed at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Finals in most Class AA events are Thursday, beginning at 9 a.m.
Here's a look at Wednesday's Class AA events.
Class AA Girls
3,200 — The runner-up last year, Monticello junior Isabel Mahoney took the next step with a gold-medal time of 10:34.50. Annika Hall of Chisago Lakes was the runner-up in 10:38.41. Delano's Mya Werner was third (10:55.63).
High Jump — Rockford sophomore Riley Freed and Princeton junior Kyleigh Noble both jumped 5 feet, 6 inches. Freed cleared that height on her first attempt to top the podium. Mankato West's Leila Pratt and DeLaSalle's Laila Moses tied for third at 5-4. Moses set a Class AA State Meet record in the 100 Hurdles prelims with a time of 14.44 seconds.
Long Jump — Mankato East senior Rylie Hansen set a Class AA State Meet record with a leap of 19 feet, 1.75 inches. Simley's Ayisat Adebayo and High Jump champion Freed were also in the top three.
Discus — The top two finishers both beat the previous Class AA State Meet record. Stewartville junior Ella Theobald won with a throw of 134 feet, 7 inches. That was 4 inches farther than runner-up Lydia Oldenkamp of Alexandria Area. Rocori's Brianna Schneider was third (126-1).
Discus Wheelchair — Big Lake junior Tayla Gassman broke her own Class AA State Meet Record with a throw of 46 feet, 5 inches, winning her fourth consecutive state title in the process. Madison Harbarth of Mankato East earned silver (30-10).
Prelims Notes — Ruby Marble ran the top qualifying times in the 100 (11.94) and 200 (24.61) and anchored Mankato West's 4x100 relay that posted a Class AA State Meet record in 48.16 seconds. ... Providence Academy recorded a Class AA State Meet record of 3:56.48 in the 4x400.
Class AA Boys
3,200 — Annandale senior Sal Wirth successfully defended his state title in a time of 9:08.20. Orono senior Owen Chapman ran 9:10.03 to finish second. Willmar's Sully Anez was third in 9:16.20.
Triple Jump — It was a 1-2 finish for a pair of Monticello seniors. Alvin Bropleh captured gold with 44 feet, 11.25 inches while Martavius Guertin finished second with 44 feet, 3.75 inches. Darius Lockett of Fergus Falls was third (43-10.75).
Pole Vault — Becker senior Owen Angell improved on last year's runner-up finish by clearing 14 feet, 6 inches on his second attempt. Runner-up Stephen Feig of Northfield also went 14-6. Brock Guth of St. Peter was third at 14 feet.
Shot Put — A year after finishing fourth as a ninth-grader among a top six that featured five seniors, Mankato East sophomore Carter Schwartz earned the gold with a put of 56 feet, 11.25 inches. Fairmont's Oliver Tordsen (55-3) and Messi Kalenda of East Grand Forks (54-8) rounded out the top three.
Shot Put Wheelchair — Winona junior Devin Filzen surpassed his own Class AA State Meet record, defending his title with a toss of 23 feet, 5.5 inches. Clayton Rudi of Thief River Falls earned silver (13-9.75).
Prelims Notes — Two relays set Class AA State Meet records in the preliminaries: DeLaSalle in the 4x100 (41.92) and Alexandria Area in the 4x200 (1:26.85). Alexandria's 4x100 time of 41.94 also beat the previous record. ... A runoff was held in the 110 Hurdles after two competitors tied for ninth. Harper Dickinson of North St. Paul and Aaron Plunkett of Faribault both ran 14.914 in the preliminaries, then Dickinson earned the last spot in the finals by winning the head-to-head race.
