Wayzata seized control early and no other team could catch the Trojans during the team portion of the Minnesota State High School League’s Clay Target State Tournament on Friday, June 24, 2022 at Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake. And the Trojans, one of the first teams to lead off the 40-team competition, used near perfection in capturing the program’s first championship in the event that began in 2014.

The Trojans compiled a five-shooter score of 489 to top runner-up Tri-City United by eight targets. Sibley East was one target back in third place at 480.

Wayzata was paced by three shooters that compiled perfect scores of 100. They were Davis Hay, Joey Moidl and Madi Schultz. Cole Fox chipped in with a 96 and Hunter Kurth had a 93 to round out the Trojans’ scoring. Wayzata surged to the leaderboard after their first-round score of 245 and at the top they would stay for nearly three hours as other schools completed their rounds.

Wayzata, one of the top programs in the 33 states that offer Clay Target, will next compete in the national championships in early July in Michigan. There are 233 teams that will participate and Wayzata is considered one of the early favorites.
